英語(yǔ)詞匯豐富，慣用語(yǔ)很多。學(xué)習(xí)英語(yǔ)者，不能只注意單字單詞，他們也必須同時(shí)學(xué)習(xí)各常見(jiàn)的慣用語(yǔ)，以便從另一領(lǐng)域增加英語(yǔ)詞匯。

什么是英語(yǔ)慣用語(yǔ)呢?它們有哪些類別呢?

所謂慣用語(yǔ)(idiomatic expressions)，顧名思義，就是兩個(gè)或兩個(gè)以上的字合組而成一個(gè)固定短語(yǔ)，具有個(gè)固定意思，有時(shí)，如片語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞，還可能有一個(gè)以上的含義。

英語(yǔ)常見(jiàn)慣用語(yǔ)有七種如下：

㈠片語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞(phrasal verbs)，如：

①turn down：拒絕;
②turn up：出現(xiàn);
③take after：長(zhǎng)得像 ……;
④put off：延期;
⑤put up with：忍受;⑥do away with：取消、廢除;⑦go back on：食言;⑧zero in on：將注意力集中在 ……

㈡介詞短語(yǔ)(prepositional phrases)，如：

①in a nutshell：總而言之;
②by leaps and bounds：很迅速地;
③with open arms：熱烈地;
④under the weather：不舒服;
⑤from time to time：偶爾;⑥of one's own free will：自愿地;⑦by degrees：漸漸地;⑧on one's own：獨(dú)自;⑨without fail ：一定;⑩in high spirits：精神奕奕地。

㈢動(dòng)詞短語(yǔ)(verb phrases)，如：

①pluck up courage：鼓起勇氣;
②get to the bottom of…… ：查詢到底;
③ hold the fort：代人盡責(zé);
④waste one's breath ：浪費(fèi)氣力;
⑤close one's eyes to……：熟視無(wú)睹;⑥come in handy：會(huì)有用處;⑦go without saying：不說(shuō)便知;⑧l(xiāng)ose track of：失去蹤跡。

㈣名詞短語(yǔ)(noun phrases)，如：

① a bird's eye view of……：概覽;
② a bolt from the blue：晴天霹靂;
③ Achilles' heel：人性上的一個(gè)弱點(diǎn);
④ child's play：輕而易舉的事;
⑤ food for thought：可供思考的事;⑥ a flash in the pan：曇花一現(xiàn);⑦a feast for the eyes ：賞心悅目事;⑧ the rat race：激烈的競(jìng)爭(zhēng)。

㈤形容詞短語(yǔ)(adjective phrases)，如：

① bent on……：決心……;
② susceptible to……：易于…… ;
③devoid of……：缺乏……;
④conducive to……：有助于……;
⑤comfortably off：富裕的;⑥ busy with……：忙于……;⑦ second to none：最佳的;⑧serious of purpose：認(rèn)真的。

㈥“三合一”短語(yǔ)，如：

① ways and means：各種方法;
② aches and pains：各種疼痛;
③ law and order：法規(guī);
④ odds and ends：零星雜品;
⑤ make or break：不成功就失敗;⑥ give and take：亦取亦舍、互相忍讓;⑦ forgive and forget：既往不咎;⑧ hale and hearty ：健壯的;⑨free and easy：自由自在的;⑩ here and there：各處;11 safe and sound：安然無(wú)恙的;12 now and then：偶爾。

㈦成語(yǔ)/諺語(yǔ)(proverbs/ maxims)，如：

① more haste, less speed：欲速不達(dá);
② man proposes, God disposes：謀事在人，成事在天;
③ strike while the iron is hot：打鐵趁熱;
④ easy come, easy go：易得易失;
⑤ time flies：光陰飛快;⑥ prevention is better than cure：預(yù)防勝過(guò)治療;⑦ never say "die"：永不言“休”;⑧ the early bird catches the worm：早起的鳥(niǎo)兒有蟲(chóng)吃。

在這七種慣用語(yǔ)中，㈠-㈤數(shù)目多又好用，片語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞尤為特出，不論是口語(yǔ)或書(shū)寫(xiě)，都很適合。第七類，流傳已久，耳熟能詳，宜于適當(dāng)時(shí)刻使用。第六類出現(xiàn)的時(shí)間較遲，數(shù)量較少，但是很有用，頗受歡迎。
